Hi Cody,
Thanks for your nice comment and your never-ending support. I think it's official: You're our No. 1 most supportive fan, and we're grateful for you. For those who read the comments, here's a little exclusive news update: In April we'll try to release the three episodes that we already have recorded and "in the can." Editing always takes me forever. We've got two juicy "Star Trek" episodes (as you know, you're the guest on the second one), and then we've got a must-hear "Godfather" episode with some bittersweet news contained therein. That's all I'll say now, but you can probably guess where this is going. Anyway, as you'll hear in "The Godfather" show, Episode 22, your Bond knowledge might come in handy for providing some closure. Thanks for writing, and I hope you catch the forthcoming three episodes. They're all gold.

Another outstanding blast from the 'cast for the CTS crew. I enjoyed listening to this one quite a bit. Interesting that "Octopussy" went over so well with everyone. I haven't seen it in years, but my memory of that one has always been that it's one of the better Bonds from the Roger Moore era. Whenever I see "Best of Bond" retrospectives, on the other hand, it seems to routinely get slagged. Be interested to know what the crew makes of the Timothy Dalton duology when you get. Dalton is a far more interesting Bond than either of the actors to play the part immediately before (Moore) and immediately after (the wildly overpraised Pierce Brosnan) him. For me, "The Living Daylights" has always been one of the most rewatchable Bonds, and, while I haven't seen it in years, I recall that "Licence to Kill" was praised in its day for a lot of the same reasons that critics flipped their lids over "Casino Royale" (the first Daniel Craig film, not the Peter Sellers Bond spoof).

Hi Alex! Thank you so much. Yes, we got a few months behind in posting episodes (totally my fault). But we kept recording episodes all along, so I'll be posting two more this month! Then, BREAKING NEWS, starting on Monday, April 2, we'll be posting WEEKLY episodes every Monday with a slightly different format. Thanks again for sticking with us so faithfully.

Sincerely,
Jason

Believe it or not, Geo isn't as much of a horror guy as you might expect. But don't worry; we have plans for Mr. Romero in the future. Three words: the "Pusher" trilogy.

Fun episode, fellas, but how the heck did this one get recorded without prior CTS contributor the estimable Geo Romero of Salt Lake City sitting in? I mean, come on. His name alone should have guaranteed him a seat at the table.

Steven - thanks. "My Blue Heaven" goes unmentioned in too many comedy lists, even Steve Martin comedy lists. I too have a system for eating pancakes to that the syrup is equally distributed among all the cakes...

Cody - at the risk of alienating my friends...I agree with you. I usually do. I don't watch as many films as you do, so my tolerance for watching movies that "suck" is higher than yours, probably, but yes, TF movies are terrible. I checked my brain at the door, but it wanted a refund nonetheless.

Hi Vance - thanks for listening. Yes, we will likely do JP trilogy in the nearer future. We've spent way too much of our budget to not use that stupid sound clip of the actual beating of a dead horse. Am I wrong, or are we being too nice to terrible franchises? I agree about the effects in Jaws. And where Jaws and others have importance in the development of effects is they kind of illustrated the handicap of what actual props could do. The short side thereafter was CG effects that looked cheesy or bad, but now have become so good that even though the effects look great, the "reality" of it is so absurd that we find it laughable (for instance, jumping a squad car in the air 30 ft to take out a helicopter, "Live Free or Die Hard"). Fun though.

Andy, I'm glad you mentioned My Blue Heaven. It's HILARIOUS and one of the best Steve Martin movies. Just a few great quotes:
-	“You call me ‘Dickie’ one more time and I’ll kill you.”
-	“He has a system for eating pancakes!”
-	And let's not forget the greatest in-grocery store greeting exchange ever: “Have a nice day!” “F!@# you!”

I still enjoy parts of Jurassic Park. When the T-Rex first comes on the scene during the nighttime rain sequence--that is classic stuff. Stuff I look forward to watching with my kids. Other than the groundbreaking effects and a beautiful musical score, the film just doesn't deliver on a classic level. The characters are one-dimensional. The dialogue isn't great (a couple of good wisecracks from Dr. Malcolm), and there are some holes in the plot (where the heck are all the park employees?).

Kids love dinosaurs, and I think the movie was made with kids in mind. Now there are timeless movies that can appeal to both young people and adults; but for me, the older I get, the more silly and less engaging Jurassic Park becomes. The last time I watched it, I remember wanting to skip chunks of the movie and just watch the dinosaur parts (similar to how I feel at an amusement park...I want to skip the boring long lines and get right onto the roller coaster). One of these days maybe I will snag it on Blu-Ray and give it another chance.

As for Jaws, I still think the shark looks good, though I am never fooled. I know they inserted some underwater footage of a real shark into the film and I can always tell the difference between the real shark footage and the robotic shark. My wife will watch Jaws with me and comment that the shark looks fake when it is chomping the air, biting at the ropes, or when it belly-flops on Quint's boat. I silently agree that it doesn't look perfect, but I ignore the special effects criticism because I love the film and the effects aren't glaringly bad.

Hi Vance,

Thanks to both you and your wife for listening to the podcast, and thanks for leaving a comment. We love it. If I may, I'd like you to expand on a couple of points you made in your comment: 1. Could you explain why "Jurassic Park" is no longer as effective for you. We haven't reviewed that trilogy yet, but we should. There is much to say. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one. 2. What flaws were you referring to in the final act of "Jaws"? Just curious. Thanks again.

Nice episode guys. My wife and I enjoy listening when we get the time. One of these days when your live broadcast is back up I will try to get into the chat room. I bet it's a lot of fun.

It is interesting to watch films age and view them again as the years go by. It really speaks to their timelessness if you can keep coming back to films even after their special effects have lost credibility. For example, I really enjoy watching Jaws now and again, even with not-always-great robotic fish showing its flaws in the final act. The movie is just too good as a whole. Jurassic Park, however, doesn't quite do it for me as I have gotten older. The CGI dinosaurs outshine the shark, but the film as a whole is, for me, much less captivating.

I kind of side with Steve, your past Star Wars host. Episode I just hasn't held up like the others have. I don't know if it deserves a lower score, but I know it definitely hurts its replay-ability. Everybody rags on the 'new scenes' and 'improved effects,' but I'll take CGI X-Wing and Tie Fighter dogfights over the slower, yawn-inducing model originals any ole' day of the week. Sorry Karl, I may just be a little too young to fully appreciate it.

I am surprised Batman Returns got so many kind words. I agree with Jason. The latter-end of that show was horrible. Batman vs. penguins? Ugh.

Oh, and Geo is right. There *is* robo-flatulence in "Revenge of the Fallen," courtesy of Jetfire, the decrepit old Decepticon that the crew digs up at the Air and Space Museum (or wherever it is that they find him). Thank you, Mr. Bay. Take a bow.

Also, lest anyone assume that I'm simply a Bay hater who bangs on anything the guy directs, I have witnessed and believe that he is capable of delivering solid entertainment. Exhibit A is as follows:

My reasons for disliking the first film are on the record (I've reviewed all three since working at the Herald; they go D-, F and F in my book). Essentially, the first film's characters (both mechanical and non-) are either uninvolving or aggressively irritating, its storytelling (to say nothing of its story) is silly and juvenile, and its wildly overpraised action is chaotic and incoherent, frequently to the point of becoming nonsensical. The biggest myth there is about Michael Bay is that he's a "good" action director. He's definitely also a panderer, Jay, as you correctly noted on the podcast, although I don't think *all* of that is conscious on his part. I think that's giving him too much credit. (Although it's inarguable that he's pandering with all of the hot girl "money" shots.)

I agree, incidentally, with your contention on the 'cast that action scenes that aren't driven by plot or character are almost always just taking up space. That's often more on the screenwriter than it is on the director, though the fault is usually shared. Alas, there are zero action scenes in all three of the "Transformers" movies combined that are driven by plot or character. There may be express motivations for some of those scenes, but telling us that the stakes are high isn't the same thing as making us believe it.

I am STUNNED that "Revenge of the Fallen" didn't get the "dead horse" sounder, and DOUBLE-STUNNED that the whole franchise somehow escaped it. Seriously, though, you guys are probably the only commentators in America who collectively enjoyed "Revenge of the Fallen" more than "Dark of the Moon." Even Michael Bay thinks "Revenge of the Fallen" is suckier than "Dark of the Moon." HE SAID AS MUCH IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE LOS ANGELES TIMES. In fact, I insist that you re-record this podcast as soon as possible and give "Revenge of the Fallen" more of the savage mockery it so richly deserves. THIS IS WHAT I THINK OF YOU, "REVENGE OF THE FALLEN":

Ahhh. It feels so good to reread that. Every time. And for good measure, here's "Dark of the Moon":

I couldn't agree more, Cody, that Karl was hiding from us. ... Nah, actually he had a pretty good excuse. In fact, he's unabashed in his love for summer blockbuster, popcorn fare like this. I have to admire that to some degree; what I can't accept, however, is my pal Karl's stubborn refusal to heed my recommendation to give "Inglourious Basterds" a try. I have told him it's Tarantino's masterpiece, and he is yet unmoved...

And Cody, I'm a little surprised at how hard you're being on the first (and third) "Transformers" movies. I'd like you to let us all know your reasons for disliking the first one so much. It's dumb, but there's more stuff to love than stuff to hate.

Thanks for writing, Cody. Looking forward to having you back again for our Indy show.

The "Transformers" movies are so soul-deadeningly awful that their admirable technical qualities just get dragged down into the muck. Everything is tainted.

Also, it was a hugely chicken(crap) move on Karl's part to duck this podcast. Don't tell me this episode couldn't have been recorded on a different weekend. Karl just didn't want to sit through two hours of nonstop ridicule for having previously anointed "Transformers" the best movie of 2007.

Actually, let me praise the sound recorders, editors and mixers. These movies have some incredible sound design.

Also, really pretty musical score. Great work from stunt people. The costume design was certainly adequate as I'm sure was the makeup. Grip and Electric departments I assume were second to none. Good location scouting. Let's see, I bet the catering was superb. The end credits certainly seemed to be spell checked and they crawled very smoothly. Yeah, no question, some amazingly talented people did some incredible work on these movies.

I guess my only real problems are with the plot, dialogue, character development--let's just say everything relative to the writing, acting, directing and editing.

The other genuine praise I will give these movies is they make a ton of money, which really does matter. Because of the them, other movies get made. So I'm actually not going to say flat out it was a terrible thing the Transformers movies were made. Just as long as I never have to sit through another one.

I guess I admire a lot of the visuals, but let's face it production designers, visual effects companies and lighting and camera people working on almost any studio movie these days are top notch. Big deal if the movie itself is not worth watching. I don't feel the need to stand up for what Mike Bay and co have done with this franchise.

I don't know, Barrett. Your one-sentence proclamation, "The Transformers movies suck," seems pretty dismissive coming from the man who always defends his fellow filmmakers so well. Couldn't you at least see some things to admire from the first one? Honestly, were you not entertained when you first saw it? JP

Yes, love Los Olvidados! Great pick, a surprisingly realistic movie for Bunuel but there's that great bizarre dream sequence with the mother and the raw meat.

Hi Matthew,
I think I do remember meeting you! Thanks for commenting. I see now where Barrett gets his good debate skills. First of all, I loved what you wrote about the difference between "Harry Potter" and "Transformers." Hilarious — and so true. In fact, I'd like to quote your comments during our upcoming podcast on the "Transformers" trilogy. I couldn't have said it better, and that deserves to be quoted: "Transformers is about violence, explosions, and objectifying women."
Anyway, I also see your point about the spiders. I guess you're right. Barrett always gets on my case about my sense of "entitlement" as a viewer — like I'm not supposed to have some expectation of quality as a paying customer. Since movies (these kind of movies) are about escapist entertainment, then I just can't make myself feel guilty about my entitlement. It's kind of like this: Most of us have ridden a roller coaster before, so we know what that experience is like; therefore, necessarily, we tend to hold other roller coasters up to that same thrilling standard. And so it is with movies... We were all kids once who were dazzled by the flickering images on the silver screen. Indeed, even as an adult, my eyes filled with tears from the sheer cinematic wonder that I was experiencing during Peter Jackson's "King Kong" (2005). In short, I am among the millions of filmic druggies, so to speak, who have experienced that high once, so I need my next big fix. And for me, it's not just about great special effects or a well-orchestrated action sequence; it's about those things being fueled by a good story. One thing I think we can all agree on is that those who have read the "Harry Potter" books surely have enjoyed the films more than those who have not. Unfortunately, I fall into the latter category.
Thanks for writing, Matthew.

Hi Jason,
I am Barrett's brother Mathew. We met but I doubt you remember.
Being a Harry Potter fan I enjoyed the podcast and thought I'd say a few things. First addressing the comments you made about the Sorcerer/Philosopher's stone and the chamber of secrets not being a big part of the movie. Both of these serve to show how Harry and Voldemort have similar origins, but responded to these so differently. I could explain how but I want to be brief.
You compared the stone to the cube from Transformers. I see your point but there's a big difference. Transformers is about violence, explosions, and objectifying women. Harry Potter, at least to fans, is about the characters so, explaining this connection/conflict between Harry and Voldemort is the entire point.
I'll finish by referring to your comments about feeling disappointment in the lack of action when facing the spiders and, in book four, the dragon. I understand this feeling. We've been spoiled by movies like Lord of the Rings to expect a good fight. The thing to remember is that Harry is twelve when the spiders attack. Yes he is a wizard but he's still a kid. Also again it shows his character. Harry isn't brave because he's an all powerful wizard. He's brave despite the danger because people need his help.

Hi Barrett,
You dazzle me as always, my friend. (Do you like how you've come to be somewhat feared on the Considering the Sequels podcast? You have commanded respect for the filmmaker's art, and I like that.) Awesome recall on the gun quotation. I haven't read the books, but I was surprised that the gun issue wasn't covered; apparently, it was! I guess I don't always give Rowling enough credit. As I said in the show, I was quite impressed with her Dementor characters being metaphorical representations of depression. I have to also agree with your last paragraph about Harry simply wanting a happy family life. I appreciated that, too. He truly is a likable character. I have never had any complaints about who Harry is ... I just wish he had "brought the thunder," so to speak, down upon Voldemort's head: We, the audience, deserved to see this, and I think Harry deserved to conquer this foe with ferocity. In Episode 13 you said I was "combat-minded." Yes, that's probably true, but isn't conflict the engine of drama? Thanks for commenting, Barrett. We're always glad to hear your insights. JP

Seriously though, you guys talked about how Harry didn't really die and seemed kind of weak. I agree with that in a dramatic sense, but as far as why he didn't die, I thought that was the whole point behind the elder wand. Wasn't that kind of Snape's and Dumbledor's plan--that the wand wouldn't work for Voldemort because he didn't take it from Draco? I remember that being a bit more satisfying in the book so I'm guessing, though I don't remember, that they probably explained that a bit better.

Another thing, in one of the books Rowling has a great line about guns. I don't remember the exact quote but it's in a wizard newspaper talking about how a muggle pointed a gun at someone. Then in parentheses it says "a gun is a kind of wand muggles use to kill each other." I thought that was great and beyond being clever and also pretty telling of how outsiders would view our use of guns, it also sort of works as a way for Rowling to explain why the wizards don't use guns--they don't really pay attention to the muggle world and aren't really even aware of them.

My final thought. I love the ending of the books and the movie--the 19 years later part. The kind of classic fairy tell is that the orphan who turns out to have special powers also turns out to be of royal blood and ends up the ruler. This is kind of the King Arthur myth (the early sword in the stone part). Harry is poised to do the same. He doesn't have royal blood but he leads the revolt and kills the enemy. Also, he is in the end able to possess all three of the deathly hallows which theoretically would have made him immortal and invincible. The books talk about how when he was young Dumbledor was obsessed with gaining and possessing the three hallows. Anyway, what I love is that to Harry, none of that matters. What's exciting to him is the idea of a happy family life, what he himself was denied. He tosses away the hallows, goes off, gets married and has kids. That's great. You don't defeat the evil ruler to become the ruler yourself, you defeat evil to insure a safe and happy continuance of ordinary life.
